Data Scientist OR – (Spacecraft Optimization)

Location: Texas, USA
Contract: Full Time, Permanent

Do you want to work on cutting-edge space technologies and contribute to the success of future space missions?

Job Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Data Scientist with a strong focus on Operations Research to join our NewSpace Client. In this role, you will play a critical part in designing, implementing, and optimizing algorithms and mathematical models to improve spacecraft operations and in-orbit mission efficiency. Your work will directly impact resource allocation, process optimization, and strategic decision-making, ensuring that space missions are executed with the highest degree of precision and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement advanced algorithms to optimize spacecraft operations, resource allocation, and mission planning.
  • Develop large-scale optimization models using techniques such as linear programming, integer programming, mixed-integer programming, and dynamic programming.
  • Apply heuristics and advanced mathematical models to solve complex optimization problems related to spacecraft and mission operations.
  • Run simulations to validate the effectiveness and performance of optimization models across various mission scenarios.
  • Preprocess and analyze large datasets to support model development and ensure data integrity.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including spacecraft engineers, mission planners, and data scientists, to align optimization models with real-world constraints and operational requirements.
  • Continuously assess the performance of optimization algorithms and make improvements to enhance efficiency and scalability.
  • Document model development processes, algorithm designs, and optimization results for internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s/Ph.D. in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing large-scale optimization models using linear programming, mixed-integer programming, and heuristics.
  • Strong understanding of optimization techniques such as dynamic programming, constraint programming, and stochastic optimization.
  • Experience with simulation tools and the ability to run what-if analyses to evaluate model performance under different scenarios.
  • Solid programming skills in Python and OR Tools with a focus on algorithm design and numerical optimization.
  • Familiarity with machine learning frameworks
  • Familiarity with preprocessing large datasets and working with structured/unstructured data to support optimization models.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex mathematical concepts to non-experts.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high-tech environment, preferably in aerospace, robotics, or related industries.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in space mission planning, spacecraft operations, or working with aerospace systems is desired, but not a must. We welcome applicants from other high-tech environments to apply.
  • Knowledge of distributed optimization, real-time decision-making, and multi-objective optimization.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based optimization and simulation platforms.
  • Knowledge of machine learning techniques for predictive modelling and optimization.

If you want to tackle some of the most complex challenges in optimizing spacecraft operations, ensuring that each mission is carried out with maximum efficiency and precision… Then this role is for you.
