Flight Software Engineer (Satellite/Spacecraft)

Location: Reading, UK (On-Site | 4 days per week)
Employment Type: Permanent (Full Time)
Package: Competitive Salary + Equity + Benefits
Relocation: Relocation support and sponsorship can be provided

Introduction
This is an exciting opportunity for a Software Engineer to join a fast-scaling, venture-backed space company developing a next-generation satellite platform. You’ll take ownership of mission-critical software that enables satellites to run autonomously, safely, and reliably, from the lab bench all the way to on-orbit operations.

The Opportunity
You’ll join a deeply technical engineering team building a satellite system capable of operating at significantly lower orbit than conventional LEO, enabled by an advanced propulsion solution that combats atmospheric drag. This role will suit an engineer who thrives in a highly hands-on environment, enjoys building real systems, and wants to see their code deployed into space.
The company is entering a critical growth phase as it prepares for its first mission, so the pace is high, and the work is impactful.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and implement the flight software stack, from low-level drivers through to higher-level mission functionality.
  • Develop software across spacecraft subsystems, including control loops (e.g., ADCS) and autonomy behaviours.
  • Take software through the full lifecycle: bench testing ? subsystem integration ? satellite validation ? on-orbit updates.
  • Ensure safe and reliable operation of the spacecraft through robust design, testing, and fault-handling approaches.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional hardware teams to ensure seamless system-level integration and mission readiness.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Strong software engineering fundamentals with experience developing reliable, production-grade systems.
  • Experience working close to hardware (e.g., embedded, real-time, controls, robotics, aerospace, or similar).
  • Comfortable owning technical delivery end-to-end, including debugging, testing, and documentation.
  • Able to operate in a fast-paced environment requiring initiative, accountability, and problem-solving.

Desirable Skills

  • Flight software, spacecraft systems, or safety-critical software experience.
  • Exposure to satellite operations, autonomy systems, or guidance/navigation/control.
  • Experience supporting test campaigns, integration, or working in lab environments.
