Satellite Communication System Engineer

NewSpace Technical are seeking a Senior System Engineer with expertise in Satellite Communications to support the design, integration, and performance evaluation of communication links between satellites and ground infrastructure. This role involves ensuring system-level communication readiness across both space and ground segments.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in RF systems, space-grade communication hardware, and digital protocols, with hands-on experience designing and validating satellite communication chains.
This position involves working on technically challenging projects, bridging spacecraft and ground systems, and supporting tasks such as hardware selection, protocol evaluation, RF testing, and performance modeling using internal validation tools and test platforms.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to trade-off studies for next-generation communication architectures
• Define and maintain satellite-to-ground connectivity solutions
• Perform link budget analysis, sizing, and margin assessments for telemetry and mission data links
• Assist in selecting onboard communication hardware (e.g., radios, antennas) for compatibility with ground systems
• Provide technical input during mission planning, including modem configuration, signal processing, and RF troubleshooting
• Support testing and validation of communication equipment using lab platforms and test kits
• Contribute to automation efforts for communication system integration and testing

Qualifications
Must Haves

• 5+ years of experience in satellite communication systems (e.g., Earth Observation, telecom, or similar missions)
• Strong understanding of RF systems engineering: link budgets, mission sizing, physical layer principles
• Experience integrating and validating space communication subsystems: radios, modems, antennas
• Familiarity with standard communication protocols such as CCSDS, DVB-S2/S2X, TTC
• Ability to interpret RF specifications and interface documentation
• Proficiency in scripting or modeling (e.g., Python, Matlab) for simulation and test automation
• Strong systems thinking and comfort working in multidisciplinary environments

Nice to Haves

• Experience developing test setups for RF or digital communication systems
• Familiarity with ground segment signal routing and baseband system integration
• Experience supporting communication interface definition and integration with external teams
• Understanding of networking concepts such as IP routing and VLAN configuration
• Awareness of secure communication system constraints (e.g., regulated or dual-use environments)
