Optomechanical Engineer – Space Systems

Full-Time, Permanent

Glasgow, UK

Are you passionate about precision design and the intersection of optics and mechanics? A pioneering company in the development of high-performance optical systems for space applications is seeking an Optomechanical Engineer to join their team.

In this role, you’ll be at the forefront of designing, integrating, and validating advanced optomechanical systems that support the next generation of EO Satellites. If you’re ready to help shape the future of space optics and work alongside experts in a collaborative, high-impact environment, this is your opportunity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams, technicians, and external partners to ensure successful system integration.
  • Provide technical leadership and support across all phases of development.
  • Design and develop high-precision optomechanical systems using advanced 3D CAD tools.
  • Create and refine detailed, high-tolerance mechanical and optomechanical drawings.
  • Develop and improve assembly and alignment procedures for optical-mechanical subsystems.
  • Integrate optical and mechanical elements while maintaining alignment and performance requirements.
  • Maintain cleanroom protocols and ensure optical system integrity during assembly and testing.
  • Plan and execute environmental qualification tests (thermal, vibration, shock).
  • Analyse test results to validate system performance and implement necessary design modifications.
  • Manage resources and timelines for optomechanical activities, ensuring milestones are met.
  • Prepare and present technical reports and project updates to stakeholders.
  • Implement quality assurance processes and conduct system inspections.
  • Document design history, assembly processes, test procedures, and customer deliverables.
  • Stay informed on advancements in space optics, precision mechanics, and industry standards.
  • Participate in relevant industry conferences, training programs, and technical workshops.
  • Seek and apply feedback to continuously improve design outcomes and team practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optomechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.

Required Experience:

  • 2-5 years in optomechanical or mechanical engineering roles, within the space sector.
  • Proven experience in the detailed design and development of high-precision optomechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and high-tolerance drawing generation.
  • Hands-on experience in Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT) of optical payloads or similar instruments.
  • Skilled in integrating optical and mechanical subsystems to ensure accurate alignment and performance.
  • Experience developing and executing test plans, including environmental testing (thermal, vibration, shock).
  • Familiarity with quality control processes and compliance with industry standards.
  • Strong documentation skills, including the preparation of design documents, test reports, and assembly records.
  • Experience coordinating technical efforts and managing project timelines and resources.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience with PLM and CAD tools such as Siemens Teamcenter and NX.
  • Proficiency in advanced CAD modeling and design techniques.
  • Understanding of FEA principles and ability to interpret results for mechanical and thermal analysis.
  • Experience using FEA tools for stress, vibration, and thermal simulation.
  • Background working in cleanroom environments and knowledge of cleanroom standards.
  • Exposure to systems engineering practices, including requirements analysis and design integration.
  • Experience with change management processes for design updates.
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers and coordinate team efforts.
  • Awareness of emerging trends in optomechanical design and space technology.
